Thanks to sponsorship support from Newcastle-under-Lyme based financial services company, racing driver and performance driving instructor, Alaric Gordon has taken a step closer to clinching the BRSCC Northern Formula Ford Championship for the 3rd time, 17 years after his last victory in 2001, following two thrilling races at Mallory Park Race Circuit in Leicestershire at the weekend.
The IronMarket backed 51 year old has returned to Formula Ford for the 2018 season after a 14-year hiatus during which he raced in prototype sports cars and other formulas. Gordon started racing in 1988, winning the Formula Ford Championship in 1999 and again in 2001.
Despite a heavy crash in qualifying at Mallory Park on Sunday, Gordon recovered well in race 1, to take 4th place in his Swift SC97, holding off a strong late challenge from George McDonald by 4/100ths of a second at the line.
Starting 4th on the grid for race 2, Gordon came out on top of an epic race-long battle with fellow championship contender Nigel Dolan which saw the protagonists nose to tail for most of the race. Gordon finally edged it by 4/10ths to take a fine podium behind Adam Quartermaine in 2nd and David McArthur who took his second win of the day in a dominant performance by the B-M Racing man.
Gordon has now extended his championship lead to 34 points and only needs two 6th place finishes in the final two rounds of the championship at Oulton Park on 29th September, to be sure of taking his 3rd title. Gordon also leads the Star of Anglesey Championship following a successful dual campaign at the Anglesey Circuit in North Wales which concludes in November.
“I’m delighted to be in the position I’m in but I’m not counting my chickens yet. I remember losing a championship at the last race of the 2016 season when a back-marker took me off so I know this isn’t won yet. All I can do is focus on the job at hand at Oulton Park and do my best for everyone in the IronMarket team” - Alaric Gordon
